The Idols of Oros

Eons before the memories of men, the One of Light created Darkness and Light. They were the first Idols, symbols of power to reflect the nature of the One and designed to combat Corruption. Kedar, the original darkness, fell deeply in love with Elaen, the beautiful light. From that love came Kaelos and Mizrana, sky and earth, as well as Evette and Azratos, life and death.

The sky, Kaelos, is the Idol of chaos and summer, a time of great storms and scorching heat. His wife, Mizrana, the earth is the Idol of balance. She brings the autumn, a time of harvest and of decay, the balance of nature. Evette, the Idol of life and spring, is bride to Azratos, the Idol of death and winter.

Mizrana and Kaelos have four children. The eldest is Akiravin, the sun, king of the Idols and Idol of wisdom, royalty and justice. The second is Marisha, the ocean, whose daughters are the rivers that connect land and sea. Then there is Themista Idol of nature, she has two children; Jaegar Idol of animals and hunt and Zorae Idol of farming and harvest. Finally, there is Zumigor Idol of wrath and his two sons, Cathal Idol of war and Drakon Idol of fire. The three of them are known as the Sons of Chaos.

Evette and Azratos have two children. Lunette, the moon, is the Idol of marriage and family, she is the wife of Akiravin and queen of the Idols. Their other child is Salus Idol of health and healing, he has one immortal child: Haenna Idol of home and hospitality.

Akiravin and Lunette share a love like Kedar and Elaen before them and because of that eternal love humans celebrate and emulate it through fidelity and marriage. They also created four children in their marriage. Eldest is Freya Idol of fertility and childbirth. Next is Yadasha Idol of sexuality, seduction and intimacy. Then there is Ander Idol of wealth. Finally, there is Raeman Idol of memory, merriment and the patron of heroes. The daughters of Raeman are the Idols of music—Arionna—storytelling—Astaria—and the arts—Adinna—they help preserve memories in the minds of men, honor heroes and provide merriment.

Lastly, the youngest of the Idols are Isra and his two sons. Isra is the son of the oldest river, Aquanette, and Jaegar, he is the Idol of travel. His twin sons were mothered by Astaria Idol of storytelling. Raldi is the Idol of communication and messages and Zori is the Idol of technology and scientific study.

The god who was not born or made is the One, creator, the god of time, the true Light. He has no beginning or end, he exists outside of time. All the Idol's powers come from him and are meant to honor him, though they are susceptible to Corruption.

The only other immortal beings are the stars but they are not Idols. Many of them became the lovers of mortals and Idols alike.

The Dance of the Stars

In the world of Oros, all stars except one are alive. They watch the world below and take notice when things of great significance happens. Occasionally, the One will tell them to watch a certain place or people when something important is about to happen.  When night comes the star perform these events for those below. They move in formations (similar to constellations in our world) to depict historic events, though some of their meanings are lost to time. When they are anticipating a new event, they will perform the stories they believe were crucial in leading up to it. On shorter summer nights, the stars perform one story and when the nights get longer in the winter they can do more. Not only is the dance of the stars a beautiful thing to behold in the night sky, it insures that no matter who much time may pass the stars will always remember. And perhaps, if one is willing to take the time to watch, one can rediscover what had been forgotten.

Betrothal and Marriage in Oros

To become betrothed in the world of Oros the prospective bridegroom must make a public announcement of his intent to marry the prospective bride, then she will have the opportunity to accept or reject the proposal. Once accepted the couple are bride and bridegroom in the eyes of all, to not follow through with the marriage is a great dishonor. Typically, a man would woo the woman, then come to a private agreement with her and her family, then the public announcement would be treated as a celebration. To marry an offering must be made to the Idol of marriage, Lunette the moon. It is her power, through the One, that binds the two until death. The offering made is the blood of the woman and the seed of the man as the vow is made with joined hands, for obvious reasons this is done in private.  The vow is: “Body, mind, and soul we are one from this moon to our last. To my mate I will be true else Azratos take me. My mate I will honor as I honor the One. My mate is my equal and my ...
